چکیده

This paper describes the development of an inexpensive (~ $500), GPS-based, radio-tracked, surface-drifter system designed to operate within a closed shallow water bay. Texas bays and estuaries are generally shallow, weather/event driven, complex non-linear systems. In spite of the amount of activity that occurs within the bays, very little real-time information is collected. The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science (CBI) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is working toward better understanding of these bays by operating a pair of SeaSonde HF Radar units within Corpus Christi Bay. This experience has shown the need for a specialized drifter that can be used in conjunction with the HF Radar operation and other bay research activities.

A New Small Drifter for Shallow Water Basins: Application to the Study of Surface Currents in the Muggia Bay (Italy)

A new small drifter prototype for measuring current immediately below the free surface in a water basin is proposed in this paper. The drifter dimensionsmake it useful for shallowwater applications. The drifter transmits its GPS location via GSMphone network. The drifter was used to study the trajectory of the surface current in the Muggia bay, the latter containing the industrial harbor of the ...

General characteristics of relative dispersion in the ocean

The multi-scale and nonlinear nature of the ocean dynamics dramatically affects the spreading of matter, like pollutants, marine litter, etc., of physical and chemical seawater properties, and the biological connectivity inside and among different basins. Based on the Finite-Scale Lyapunov Exponent analysis of the largest available near-surface Lagrangian data set from the Global Drifter Progra...

Gene flow by larval dispersal in the Antarctic notothenioid fish Gobionotothen gibberifrons.

The diversification of the teleost suborder Notothenioidei (Perciformes) in Antarctic waters provides one of the most striking examples of a marine adaptive radiation. Along with a number of adaptations to the cold environment, such as the evolution of antifreeze glycoproteins, notothenioids diversified into eight families and at least 130 species. Here, we investigate the genetic population st...
